Austria(Bureau Reports) A spectacular burst water pipe broke out on Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse in Vienna-Margareten on Tuesday morning.
A section of the water pipeline was badly damaged during construction work on the underground extension. The water pipe burst around 7.45 a.m., considerable amounts of water leaked onto the roadway, and gravel was washed onto the roadway. The Viennese waterworks blocked the line, fire brigade and police on the street. The clean-up work took a few hours, but the road was opened again shortly before noon. The incident happened in the course of construction work for the extension of the U2 underground line, specifically at the construction site for a switch system and an emergency exit on Reinprechtsdorfer Straße. According to Wiener Linien, the line was damaged when an element of a sheet pile wall was installed. The progress of the subway construction site was not affected, as a spokeswoman for Wiener Linien. Work is currently in progress on the U2 / U5 subway junction – part of the U2 is currently closed for this. After the end of the closure, the U2 will return to its “old” section – that is, use the completely redesigned stations that were actually modernized for the U5. The turquoise line U5 will then later use this section alongside the U2. According to the current status, parallel traffic will end in 2028. The U2 will then branch off at the town hall and head for Matzleinsdorfer Platz – via the new stops Neubaugasse, Pilgramgasse and Reinprechtsdorfer Straße.
