ISLAMABAD – A delegation from political section of US Embassy held meeting with senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, discussing the country’s political developments, democratic process and challenges facing the opposition party.
Senior PTI leaders and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser led PTI delegation, while party lawmaker Barrister Umair Niazi also participated in the meeting with American diplomatic officials. The meeting provided PTI leaders with opportunity to present their perspective on Pakistan’s current political environment directly to representatives of the US Embassy.
Sources familiar with the discussions said the PTI leadership raised concerns over the country’s political situation, highlighting recent developments and challenges that the party believes require attention. The discussions also covered the broader democratic process, ongoing political affairs and the changing political environment in Pakistan.
PTI representatives briefed the visiting American officials on their assessment of the domestic political situation, outlining the party’s position on key developments and sharing their reservations about the prevailing circumstances.
US Embassy delegation, meanwhile, listened to the concerns and observations presented by the PTI leadership. While meeting involved detailed exchange of political views, sources did not disclose whether any specific commitments or assurances were made by either side.
The reported diplomatic meeting comes against a backdrop of political tensions and stalled dialogue between the government and opposition. Earlier in October, government and PTI representatives held negotiations, but disagreements over access to imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan and security policy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa complicated the talks.
The latest interaction with American diplomats adds another dimension to PTI’s political engagements, although the discussions were described as an exchange of views rather than formal negotiations.
