Japan ( Tokyo) Japan’s Prince Hisahito, the son of Crown Prince and Princess Akishino and the second in line to the throne, has visited Ise Jingu shrine in central Japan.
He went to the shrine in Mie Prefecture on Monday to report that he had completed his coming-of-age ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Saturday.
The 19-year-old prince paid a visit to Ise Jingu’s Outer Shrine around 8:15 a.m.
He then went on to the Inner Shrine, which is dedicated to Amaterasu-omikami, the sun goddess said to be the first Imperial ancestor.
Wearing a Western-style morning coat, the prince received a purification ritual outside the shrine gate, and slowly proceeded on the pathway, led by a priest.
He made an offering and paid his respects at the main hall and reported that he had completed his coming-of-age ceremony.
The prince is scheduled to travel on to Nara Prefecture to pay a visit to the mausoleum of Emperor Jinmu, who ancient history books say was the first emperor of Japan.
