North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared poised to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, with Pyongyang’s state-run media on Wednesday highlighting “the strategic importance” of bilateral ties amid warnings by the U.S. against a possible arms deal.
Kim arrived in Russia aboard his personal armored train early Tuesday, but the timing and location of any summit with Putin remained unclear early Wednesday. The North Korean leader could meet Putin at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, in the country’s far east region, Kyodo News reported, with Kim following this with a visit to an aircraft factory that manufactures Sukhoi fighter jets.
Putin appeared to hint that this could be the case, telling journalists Tuesday that he would soon travel to the Russian spaceport. “I’ve got my program there, and when I get there you’ll know,” he was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.
