CTV( Japan) Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae has held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian by telephone. She conveyed Japan’s stance that quick de-escalation of the situation is most important, and strongly called for ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Takaichi spoke with Pezeshkian for about 25 minutes on Wednesday afternoon.
Takaichi expressed the view that Japan welcomes the agreement between the United States and Iran on a two-week ceasefire as a positive development.
She also expressed hope that measures to ease the situation, including ensuring safe passage of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, will actually be taken, and a final agreement will soon be reached through diplomacy.
Takaichi stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global logistics and an international public good. She called for ensuring safe passage of vessels of all countries, including those connected with Japan, as soon as possible.
The prime minister referred to a Japanese national who had been detained by Iranian authorities and was released on bail on Monday. She noted that the individual was under bail, and called for a complete resolution.
Pezeshkian reportedly explained to Takaichi about Iran’s stance on the current situation.
The two leaders agreed to continue their communications.
Takaichi later told reporters that the Japanese government has been engaging in diplomatic efforts in close coordination with the international community.
She said she and her government will continue making proactive efforts at all levels.
