Japan(Tokyo) japan With nine days to go before the start of the Tokyo Olympics, authorities are stepping up security at the National Stadium in the capital.
On Wednesday, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department and prefectural police departments conducted a security sweep of the compound of the main Olympic stadium.
Later, around-the-clock patrolling will start in the area, which will be off-limits to everyone except Olympic staff carrying official ID cards.
Another group, including police officers and officials from nearby companies, joined the security sweep, checking bushes and under benches for suspicious objects.
Tens of thousands of security staff will be deployed at 43 Olympic and Paralympic venues, mostly in the capital.
Noda Tetsuyuki, a senior officer with the Metropolitan Police Department, said it is the responsibility of the police to ensure safety at the Olympics, which will attract attention at home and abroad. He also said he would like the public to help by reporting any suspicious objects, individuals, or vehicles in order to prevent potential acts of terrorism.
