The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says there were 4,000 more coronavirus cases in the capital between April 2 and October 2 than previously reported.
Officials announced the upward revision on Friday. The six-month period includes the country’s fourth and fifth waves of infections.
They say the net increase was 4,065, with 4,512 added and 447 deleted.
August saw the highest spike, with a net increase of 3,587. The officials say the additional cases account for about 3 percent of the monthly total. They point out that this would not be significant enough to have affected their response to the pandemic.
The officials are partly attributing the discrepancy to public health centers reporting incorrect case numbers to the metropolitan government. But the officials also acknowledge that they should have checked the numbers more carefully.
They say they knew about the error in September, but decided to delay the announcement because they needed time to analyze the details.
The metropolitan government made similar corrections in February.
