Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has left for the United Kingdom to attend the COP26 UN climate conference.
Kishida told reporters before his departure from Tokyo that he wants to impress upon the world Japan’s determination to exercise strong leadership to realize zero emissions across Asia.
This is his first overseas trip since taking office in October.
Kishida is expected to outline the steps Japan will take to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The measures include reducing the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by 46 percent from fiscal 2013 levels by fiscal 2030.
Kishida will also likely call on other major greenhouse gas emitters like China to do more on climate change.
Arrangements are underway for Kishida to meet separately with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other leaders during his stay in Britain, which is expected to last just a few hours.
