Japan(Tokyo) First class Japanese athletes who win gold for their country at Tokyo 2020 will be honoured by Japan Post with a golden mailbox in their hometowns.
Officials at the Cabinet Secretariat and the postal service unit have announced that when a Japanese athlete wins a gold medal at the Olympics or Paralympics, a traditional red mailbox will be painted gold to mark their achievements.
“I hope we can install as many golden mailboxes as possible throughout the country,” Japan Post Co.,Ltd President and CEO, KINUGAWA Kazuhide, told a news conference.
On each of the golden mailboxes will be the medallist’s name, sport and hometown in Japanese, English and Braille.
The mailboxes will be set up with the approval of the medallists, and will remain in place after the Games. The popular mailboxes will attracted sports fans and tourists, says the Cabinet Secretariat.
At London 2012, Royal Mail, Great Britain’s mail service, set up a golden mailbox scheme to honour the country’s Olympian and Paralympians who won gold during the Games.
