NHK’s decision desk is projecting that Japan’s ruling coalition will stay in power.
NHK expects Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner, Komeito, will secure a majority of the 465 seats in the Lower House.
The coalition’s largest opponent, the Constitutional Democratic Party, could gain seats.
Another member of the opposition, Nippon Ishin Japan Innovation Party, is expected to more than triple its pre-election force of 11.
Our exit polls and analysis suggest the ruling coalition will likely take 239 to 288 seats. That’s above the majority the prime minister set as his benchmark for election victory.
The LDP is projected to secure 212 to 253 seats.
That’s a drop from the 276 it had before the election.
Meanwhile, the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party is expected to walk away with 99 to 141 seats. That means it could add to its pre-election force of 109.
These projections are based on data gathered before Election Day, as well as at the polls.
