The head of Japan’s largest opposition party retained a seat in the Lower House election on Sunday.
Constitutional Democratic Party Leader Edano Yukio won in the Saitama No.5 district.
Saitama Prefecture is just north of Tokyo. Many residents commute to the capital every day. Edano and a ruling party candidate ran for a single seat.
Edano won nine elections in the past. He is a lawyer. And he’s known for being the chief Cabinet secretary during the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The other candidate, Makihara Hideki of the main governing Liberal Democratic Party, is also a lawyer. While he never won in this district, he got a seat through proportional representation. He is supported by Komeito. He lost Sunday’s race, but has secured a seat through proportional representation.
