Japanese officials reported 17,832 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the total to date to 1,148,601.
An additional 10 deaths were announced, bringing the total to 15,424.
The health ministry says the number of seriously ill coronavirus patients, including those on ventilators or in intensive care units, reached 1,563, up 42 from Saturday.
