The leaders of the Group of 20 nations are holding a summit in Italy to discuss issues including climate change.
The agenda on Saturday is expected to include the impact of high energy prices on the global economy, and digitalization, which has become crucial during the coronavirus pandemic.
The G20 accounts for about 80 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.
The leaders will discuss climate change on Sunday. Summit chair Italy wants them to make progress in setting a target year for net zero emissions.
Officials in the country hope to bring that momentum into the COP26 climate conference scheduled to start in Britain right after the summit.
But it’s uncertain whether they can find common ground. Differences were evident when the G20’s environment ministers discussed the issue.
European members called for stepping up measures to achieve a carbon-free society, but emerging and oil-producing members were more reluctant.
Italy will summarize the outcome of the summit when it closes on Sunday. Many of the G20 leaders plan to attend the COP26 meeting.
