The European Union has launched digital certificates that prove their holders have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus or have recently had negative PCR tests.
The EU Digital COVID Certificate officially came into force on Thursday to facilitate smooth movement of citizens within the bloc. The passes show when their holders have been vaccinated and which vaccines they received.
Travelers can present the certificates in the form of QR codes at airports and other points of entry to be exempted from quarantine requirements and virus tests upon arrival in destination countries.
Passengers at an airport in Italy displayed the QR codes on their mobile devices and showed them for airline staff to scan.
An airline employee said the certificates are a major step toward revitalizing tourism in Europe and elsewhere.
