Three tropical storms have taken shape near Japan, with two forecast to possibly approach the country’s main island of Honshu.
The Meteorological Agency says a low pressure system turned into Tropical storm Mirinae at 3 p.m. on Thursday at 120 kilometers northeast of Naha City in the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa.
The storm is packing winds of 64.8 kilometers per hour and gusts of 90 kilometers per hour near its center. It is moving north-northeast at 20 kilometers per hour.
Heavy rain of 50 millimeters per hour may hit Okinawa’s main island. People near the storm need to stay vigilant against strong winds and high waves.
Mirinae will start moving at a faster speed on Friday afternoon and veer east over the sea south of Honshu. The storm may approach eastern Japan on Saturday and Sunday.
Meteorological Agency officials are calling on people to stay up to date on the storm.
Another low-pressure system turned into Tropical storm Nida over the sea east of Honshu at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
The storm is producing winds of 64.8 kilometers per hour and gusts of 90 kilometers per hour. It is moving north at 30 kilometers per hour.
Agency officials are urging ships near the storm to stay on alert.
Another tropical storm, Lupit, is moving over the southern part of mainland China. It took shape on Wednesday.
The storm is traveling north and may come close to Okinawa, the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture, and western Japan next week.
