HERMOSILLO, Sonora (MEX) — Cuba and Japan remain the lone undefeated teams in the V WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2022, after the first official day of Super Round action in Hermosillo, Mexico. Both Cuba and Japan – the 2016 U-15 Baseball World Cup finalists — needed to stage comebacks to keep their records perfect Wednesday.
Top-ranked Japan defeated defending U-15 World Champions USA, 12-6. The Americans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first before Japan put on five runs in the bottom half and five more in the third. Winning pitcher Ryuga Sato struck out six over three innings of work.
After trailing Panama early, Cuba exploded for five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Maikel Rodriguez that lifted his squad to an 8-3 rain-shortened victory.
Chinese Taipei shut out Puerto Rico, 9-0, behind a strong performance from Chinese Taipei starter Yao-Yun Chang. Yan-Lun Huang went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.
In the only Placement Round game of the day, Matyas Novotny pitched Czechia to their first win of the tournament with a seven-inning masterpiece, leading his team to a 4-0 victory against France in a 10th-13th Placement Round match-up.
Thursday’s Super Round actionincludes Panama (0-2) vs. USA (1-1), Puerto Rico (0-2) vs. Cuba (2-0) and Chinese Taipei (1-1) vs. Japan (2-0).
In 7th to 13th place matchups, Guam (1-0) and France (0-1) will collide while Mexico (0-0) will meet Venezuela (0-0).
