A reception has been held to welcome International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and other officials, five days ahead of the opening of the Tokyo Olympics.
About 40 people are believed to have been at the event held on Sunday evening at the State Guest House in Tokyo.
They included the Tokyo Games organizing committee chief Hashimoto Seiko, Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide, Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko, and previous committee head Mori Yoshiro.
Hashimoto told reporters on Saturday that the reception had been scheduled from the beginning, even before the Games were postponed.
But she said it would be scaled down to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and held without food and drinks while keeping sufficient social distance.
Outside the building, demonstrators calling for the Games to be canceled rallied with placards that said: “Protect lives rather than the Olympics.”
