Japan (Tokyo) Japan’s chief trade negotiator Akazawa Ryosei says both Japan and the United States can benefit from a multibillion-dollar Japanese investment in the country.
Speaking to the Upper House Budget Committee on Friday, Akazawa stressed that the 550-billion-dollar investment, which was part of the trade deal between Tokyo and Washington, will be in the interests of both countries.
He said a list of investments that will benefit Japan and not violate its domestic laws will be drawn up. President Donald Trump will then choose from the options.
He explained that the aim of the investment is to build supply chains in the US, in fields that are vital for both countries’ economic security.
Akazawa stressed that the agreement is designed to work to the benefit of both countries, and is anything but an unequal treaty.
He added that Japanese companies will not be bound by the agreement to expand their investment in the US, or to ramp up trade with their US counterparts.
He said that any business decision, including those on investment and purchases of goods, should be made rationally, in light of the merits and risks of their partners.
