Japan(Tokyo) Japanese police have arrested two American and two British electricians working for the Tokyo Olympics on suspicion of using cocaine.
Police said on Tuesday that the four men, including 22-year-old American Ray Dalton Bouquet, were suspected of using the drug in and around Tokyo earlier this month.
Investigators said the case came to light when Bouquet was questioned by officers in the early hours of July 3. He allegedly broke into a condominium building while drunk in the Roppongi entertainment district of Minato Ward.
Investigators said this led to all four men undergoing urine tests, after they spent the previous evening drinking together in Roppongi.
Police said that all the suspects tested positive for cocaine, although they have denied using the drug.
The four men work for a firm that handles power generators for industrial use and arrived in Japan between February and May as Olympic staff. They are reportedly engaged in maintenance work while staying at an accommodation facility in Minato Ward.
The Tokyo Games’ organizing committee expressed its “profound regret” and said the incident had “tarnished” the Olympics and should not have taken place.
The committee said in a statement that the four men belonged to a firm contracted to install and manage power sources.
It added that it will issue a “stern warning” to the firm and will take measures to prevent a recurrence of such an incident and to restore the public’s trust.
