North Korea failed to put a spy satellite into orbit on its second try in less than three months early Thursday, state-run media said, with authorities vowing another attempt.
The launch prompted Japan to issue an emergency warning via its J-alert system just before 4 a.m., urging residents of Okinawa Prefecture to take cover indoors. That alert was lifted after about 20 minutes
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, the government’s top spokesman, told an emergency news conference that it was not clear if any debris from the launch had fallen into Japanese territory, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
