KARACHI – Cambridge International cancelled International A-Level Mathematics examination scheduled for May 15, after shocking reports that the question paper was leaked online, sparking panic and uncertainty among students across Pakistan.
The controversy broke out within the country’s education system after allegations surfaced that the A-Level Mathematics paper 9709 had been compromised, raising serious concerns over examination security and credibility. The incident has triggered immediate action from the examination authority.
Cambridge Country Director in Pakistan confirmed that the cancelled exam will now be held on May 22, as authorities scramble to restore order and rebuild trust in the assessment system. The board has also begun reviewing security procedures across examination centres nationwide in an effort to prevent further breaches.
The decision was taken after consultations with key stakeholders, stressing the urgent need for tighter security arrangements and stronger monitoring mechanisms at exam centres across Pakistan.
All institutions are expected to receive detailed guidelines outlining stricter security protocols by May 22, as the authorities attempt to plug gaps that may have enabled the alleged leak and ensure such incidents do not recur.
Adding further seriousness to the situation, the Additional Inspector General has reportedly submitted recommendations for procedural reforms linked to the revised examination schedule and the handling of results, signaling possible systemic changes ahead.
Cambridge Country Director Uzma Yusuf described the alleged paper leak as highly unusual during the examination season, stating that certain elements appear to be deliberately trying to undermine the integrity of the examination system and the future of students. She further confirmed that legal measures are being pursued to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
