A Japanese Self-Defense Force C2 aircraft landed on Wednesday night at an airport in the Afghan capital of Kabul to evacuate Japanese nationals and others, but none had arrived yet.
The SDF had dispatched the C2 and two other transport aircraft to neighboring Pakistan on a mission to evacuate Japanese nationals and local staff at the Japanese Embassy in Afghanistan.
The C2 plane transported personnel from the Pakistani capital of Islamabad to Kabul on Wednesday night to guide the evacuees. The aircraft was scheduled to return to Islamabad with the evacuees.
The Japanese government is asking people who wish to be evacuated to get to the airport on their own. However, many of them are likely experiencing difficulty doing so.
The other two SDF aircraft, C130s, arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday and are expected to carry evacuees from Kabul to Islamabad on Thursday.
The SDF hopes to airlift as many people as possible on Thursday as the US troop withdrawal deadline looms. US President Joe Biden has said he plans to stick to the August 31 deadline.
